Message from DO-IT Leadership
Welcome to the University of Washington's Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology (DO-IT) Center. For over three decades, our mission has been to empower individuals with disabilities through technology, education, and advocacy. As we continue to navigate an ever-changing world, our commitment to creating inclusive environments and fostering independence remains steadfast.
At DO-IT, we believe that disability is a natural part of the human experience. Our work is rooted in the understanding that when the community removes barriers and provides effective accommodations, individuals with disabilities can achieve their full potential in education, employment, and community participation. Through our various programs and initiatives, we strive to turn this belief into reality.
Our approach is multifaceted, focusing on several key areas:
- Technology Access: We explore and promote the use of assistive technologies that can level the playing field for individuals with disabilities. From screen readers to speech-to-text software, we're constantly evaluating and recommending tools that enhance independence and productivity.
- Education and Outreach: Through workshops, summer programs, and online resources, we educate students, parents, educators, and employers about disability rights, accommodations, and universal design. Our goal is to create a more informed and inclusive society.
- Research and Development: We collaborate with partners across various sectors to conduct research that informs best practices in accessibility and inclusion. This research drives innovation in both technology and policy.
- Advocacy: We work tirelessly to advocate for policies and practices that promote equal access and opportunities for individuals with disabilities in education and employment.
- Community Building: DO-IT fosters a vibrant community of individuals with disabilities, their families, educators, and allies. This network provides support, mentorship, and a platform for sharing experiences and resources.
As we look to the future, we're excited about the possibilities that emerging technologies and evolving social attitudes present. Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and advanced robotics offer new avenues for accessibility and inclusion. At the same time, there's a growing recognition of the value of diversity in all its forms, including disability.
However, we also recognize the challenges that lie ahead. The digital divide, particularly as it affects individuals with disabilities, remains a significant concern. Additionally, as our society becomes increasingly reliant on technology, ensuring that this technology is accessible to all is more crucial than ever.
To address these challenges and seize the opportunities before us, we need your support and engagement. Whether you're a student, educator, parent, employer, partner, vendor, community member, or other stakeholder, there's a role for you in our mission. Explore our website to learn about our programs, access our resources, and find out how you can get involved.
Together, we can create a world where all individuals, regardless of ability, have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Thank you for your interest in DO-IT. We look forward to working with you to build a more inclusive and accessible future for all.
Sincerely,
Scott Bellman, Director of DO-IT Center
Mary Mulvihill, Executive Director of Accessible Technology Services
