DO-IT’s AccessCollege Initiative guides faculty, technology, service providers, veterans units, employers, and students in promoting the success of all students, including those with disabilities, in postsecondary studies and careers. It promotes the application of universal design and effective accommodations to physical spaces, instruction, services, and technology in technical schools, colleges, and universities, as well as growth in self-determination, technology use, and academic skills for students with disabilities.

Rights

Everyone has both rights and responsibilities. All children with disabilities at the K-12 level in the United States have a right to a free and appropriate education in the most inclusive setting possible. In postsecondary settings, students with disabilities have the right to access postsecondary activities and programs and the right to reasonable accommodations. Faculty members have the right ask that students demonstrate knowledge and skills essential to course content. This page shares resources that help clarify the rights and responsibilities of educators, student support staff, and students with disabilities.

Accommodations

The best accommodations are unique to the individual and developed through a cooperative relationship between the faculty member and the student, sometimes with the assistance of the campus disabled student services office. In this resource, discover strategies for fully including students with disabilities in college classes and activities.
