This program was established by the Dunlap family to honor the memory of University of Washington student Carl James Dunlap.
Carl was passionate, funny, and overwhelmingly positive. He had a wide circle of friends, with whom he watched sports, played video games, went to raves, and so much more. He had been student body president in middle school, and he played in the drumline in high school. At UW, he attended the Foster School of Business, where he aspired to work in sports management. He interned with the Everett Silvertips, and he ultimately aimed to be a general manager in the National Hockey League. He had traveled widely and spent time experiencing the world and learning from others. He loved his dog Amy deeply.
Carl started his journey with DO-IT as a Scholar in 2014, and he interned in the program in 2016. He continued to mentor younger Scholars, sending messages online and returning to share his experiences throughout the year at panels, networking events, and Summer Study. He had a strong connection to many of his peers in the program, keeping friendships and staying in contact.
Carl was about to start his last year of his undergraduate degree when he passed away suddenly from complications of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. To honor his memory and legacy, the Dunlap family wants to support others like Carl, those who strive to succeed despite barriers due to our educational systems and their physical disabilities.
